TABOO DANCE COMPANY was formed in 2004 by Choreographer Kirsten Wheeler, who was awarded The Carl Alan Street Dance Teachers award in 2014. Currently Taboo has 30 members, aged between 7 and 23 years who train and take class together in Gravesend, Kent. The individual teams that make up Taboo are Anarchy, Remix & Elysium.

Since 2005 Taboo have competed in many competitions and performed in shows and charity events such as The Duke of Edinburgh Awards in London, the Clothes Show live @ the NEC Birmingham, the Dartford Festival and the Hop Farm Kent. Corporate events for companies such as Ernst and Young solicitors, the British Inspiration Awards and the London Taxi Drivers. Taboo have been the support act for Mcfly @ the Kent Music Festival and even spent a day at Borstal Young offender’s prison performing to the young adults.

In March 2009 REMIX won the Open stage event at Move it, Olympia and from there were asked to perform at Live Vibe, Sadlers Wells, London.

In April 2009 Taboo represented England at Dance Excellence in Hollywood, America, where they were awarded the highest level of achievement by the Dance Excellence performance boards.

Remix were also awarded The NXG Award for Best Dance Group of 2009.

Also in 2009 Taboo appeared on Sky 1 Got to Dance and were featured in the street dance battle.

In 2010 Taboo were Semi finalists on Britain’s Got Talent and became “Health Heroes” for the NHS. Remix also made the final of Barclays Live Dance Competition in Leister Square, London.

Taboo were featured cast members in Stage School on E4 both in 2017 and 2018.

Taboo Dance Company has continued to represent their country over the last 10 years in the IDO Europeans and Worlds Hip Hop Championships, picking up a number of podium medals along the way. They're currently World, UK and Dutch IDO champions. Taboo were also Disney Dance Camp Champions and SOAR European champions in 2019.

These Young dancers are serious about their future in dance and performance which has led a number of Taboo members to further advance into performing Arts and Dance Colleges, not surprisingly Taboo has had a number of members receive scholarships to such establishments as Bird College and Sylvia Young’s.

Ex Taboo members have or are currently working on Cruise ships, working in the commercial sector and on tour or in West End musicals, such as Wicked, The body guard, Mary Poppins and Mathew Bourne’s Swan Lake.

Taboo have passion, drive, dedication, creativity and a big love of Dance!

Taboo are very proud of their achievement in making it to the live semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent. They have expressed it as being one of the best and memorable things they have ever done to date! Britain’s Got Talent was a great experience!

 


Sponsorship

Taboo have competed on a local, regional national and international level. Our high points have been winning our place on the UK team selected to represent our country at the European and World Championship from 2007 to 2020. Our success was even further enhanced when our teams were selected to represent the UK at Dance Excellence USA. 

To date, the dancers and their families have funded the teams and many events themselves, but as Taboo Dance Company become more high profile parents are finding it quite difficult to afford it. We have undertaken a number of fund raising events ourselves over the years but would love the financial support of local public and private businesses.
